Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Fairway Woods
- Technology Meets Distance
By David Theoret
First things first. This is a great-looking golf club, in fact, the entire Ai Smoke line-up looks incredible. The grey carbon fiber that covers the majority of the crown has an intricate almost houndstooth look and the black and white "smoke" design is the first thing you see when you take the headcover off. The face is not too tall and seeing the ball rise just above the face inspires confidence. The sound this club produces on a solid hit is one you'll recognize if you've been hitting Callaway fairway woods for a while. As far as feel is concerned, hit it well and you'll know it.
When it comes to performance, the new Ai Smoke fairway woods deliver superior ball speed with a lot of forgiveness and a mild amount of spin. Gone are Callaway's Jailbreak and Batwing technologies; the company's new supercomputer is so good at optimizing faces for each model that both technologies can be built into an already "spring-loaded" face.
Callaway's Ai Smart Face technology is a breakthrough in face design that utilizes data gathered from over 250,000 actual players' swings. Every Smart Face creates sweet spots across the face and is designed to optimize launch and spin. When you combine the Max's superior stability with the Ai Smart Face you'll have every reason to believe that the ball is going a long way. And exactly where you aimed it!
The Carbon Chassis has been refined to save even more weight. The weight savings were dispersed evenly - 12 grams near the face in the Tungsten Speed Cartridge and 12 grams at the rear. This helps to optimize launch and spin and deliver stability and forgiveness. After gathering all this data, Callaway decided to give the Ai Smoke MAX a neutral ball flight making it appetizing to most golfers. The 15° and 16.5° models feature an adjustable hosel allowing you to fine-tune them for either a fade or draw.
Callaway' Ai Smoke 3-wood is one of the easiest clubs to hit and get the ball in the air quickly without losing any playability. The Ai Smoke MAX delivers the right amount of spin; not only does the ball fly far, but it also doesn't run out too far. Whether you're looking to hit it long and far or hit a punch shot into a strong wind, you can do it with confidence. It's also easy to shape shots.
Because impact points on the face of a fairway wood are much lower than on a driver, Callaway created four different fairway heads, each with its own optimized Smart Face. The Max offers distance and forgiveness while the Max D is more suited for players looking for a little more distance and forgiveness. The Max Fast is a lightweight performance model which has been known to deliver up to an additional 2 yards. The Triple Diamond model is designed for better players looking for distance and workability.
Callaway's new Ai Smoke fairway woods have achieved the same ranking as their Paradym drivers - #1! You must wonder how much further they can take this. You'll be hard pressed to find a fairway wood that delivers more ball speed; get your launch angle and spin figured out and you'll likely be hitting your fairway woods farther than ever.

David Theoret has been in the golf and golf travel industry for over 10 years, primarily selling online advertising. For the past seven years, he has also been a golf writer, reviewing golf courses, resorts, destinations, equipment, golf apparel, and training aids - the latter of which never seems to help. David's articles and reviews have been posted on many golf travel and equipment websites.
Growing up in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, it was naturally assumed he would play hockey. Beginning at the age of 3 and continuing into his late 30's, he did just that. However, after one too many pucks to the head, he realized that golf was a lot easier on the body (whoever said hockey players were slow) and took the game up.
After moving to Florida and accepting a position with TravelGolf Media (now part of GolfNow) his love for the game grew exponentially. Most Saturdays you will find him on a course somewhere in Florida or on the practice range reinforcing his bad habits. David plays to a 10 handicap - unless there is money involved in which case it goes considerably higher. He currently resides in Lakeland, FL with his wife Belinda and their two "kids", Madyson and Molly.
