Berry Wins College Series at the University of Maryland

Freed Rides Hot Start to Victory

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The International Junior Golf Tour traveled to College Park, Md., on Oct. 5-6 for the College Series at the University of Maryland. The two-day, 36-hole tournament was contested at the University of Maryland Golf Course, with players competing for national rankings and IJGT Merit Points. The field consisted of 62 players, ages 10-19, representing five states and two countries.

The University of Maryland Golf Course sits directly across the street from the school's campus and is located 10 miles from Washington D.C. Opened in 1959, the par-71 course is a George W. Cobb design. Cobb also designed the par-3 course at Augusta and Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C. His design at the University of Maryland features tree-lined fairways, a number of long par-4s and par-3s, and great views of the Maryland campus. The players were greeted by unusually warm October weather, as temperatures reached the mid 80s on both days.

The Boys 15-19 Division came down to the wire for the second consecutive week. Brandon Berry of Great Falls, Va., came out victorious with a one-stroke victory over Walter Egloff of Chevy Chase, Md., and Luke Schaap of Potomac, Md. Berry finished with a 3-over-par 145 for the two-day tournament.

The first round was filled with lots of great golf and low scores. Berry had a tough time with the front nine, as he shot a 3-over-par 38. He recovered on the back, carding two birdies and one bogey on his way to a 1-under 35 to finish the day with a 73.

Blake Micholas of Potomac, Md., was the leader after day one, shooting a 1-over-par 72. Micholas's round was highlighted by birdies on holes Nos. 1, 7, and 14. Micholas and Berry were part of a group of nine players within two strokes of the lead after the first round. Joining the two were Brendan Bacskai (73) of Berwyn, Pa., Jordan Bobb (74) of Rockville, Md., Will Byrne (74) of McLean, Va., Nicholas Infanti (74) of Clarksburg, Md., Rij Patel (74) of Hunt Valley, Md., David Ross (74) of Lorton Va., and Schaap (74), setting up for an entertaining final round.

A few groups ahead of the leaders, Egloff was putting himself back into contention with a very strong back nine. He birdied the 13th hole, and then carded another on the 17th hole, shooting a 2-under-par 34 on the back nine, to finish the day at even-par 71. Egloff was the leader in the clubhouse with a 75-71-146, awaiting the rest of the groups.

After bogeying holes Nos. 11 and 14, Schaap birdied the par-5 16th hole to get back to 4-over-par for the tournament. He finished with back-to-back pars on 17 and 18 to join Egloff in the clubhouse at 146.

Unaware of the scores in groups ahead of him, Berry entered the 16th hole tied with Schaap and Egloff at 4-over-par. He recovered from his front nine and was 1-under-par on the back nine as he teed off on No. 17. A wayward drive left him in a tough spot but Berry stuck his next shot to within five feet of the cup. He sank his birdie putt and entered No. 18 with a one-stroke lead.

Showing no nerves, Berry attacked the par-4 18th hole, but missed the green with his approach shot. He almost holed out for birdie on his chip, instead leaving himself a three-foot putt for par and the victory. He sank the putt to earn the one-stroke victory.

"Everything was ok. Pretty solid, pretty consistent," Berry described his game after the round.

In the Girls Division, Liza Freed of Alexandria, Va., got off to a quick start and never looked back, on the way to her second career victory in an IJGT Event. Freed's final score of 75-73-148 put her nine shots clear of her closest competitor.

Teeing off on hole No. 10, Freed began the first round with consecutive birdies. Following a bogey on No. 12, she scored another birdie on hole No. 14 and finished her first nine at 2-over-par 38. Even with the birdie barrage, Freed was one shot back of Ashley Dingman of Lorton, Va., through nine holes. However, after the first round was complete Freed held a two-stroke lead over Dingman.

Freed did not start as hot in the final round, bogeying the 10th hole, but Dingman also struggled on the hole, carding a double bogey. Freed quickly got her game together, playing the next seven holes in 1-under-par. A bogey on No. 18 gave her a 1-over-par 37 for her first nine holes, while Dingman could not get anything going on her way to a 42.

With confidence and a comfortable lead, Freed put together one of the best rounds on the front nine of any player in the field. She carded par on the first seven holes. That streak ended with a bogey on hole No. 8, but she came back to par No. 9, and shoot a front-nine 36, to finish at 73 for the day. Her final-round 73 won her the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

"I hit an ok drive. Then I hit a 5-iron to about 10 feet from the hole. I was just really happy, that's one of my hardest clubs to hit. Then on the second hole I also made a birdie," Freed said about her first round.

Dingman finished second with scores of 77-80-157, and Amanda Myers of North Potomac, Md., was third at 87-75-162.

Like the older boys, the Boys 14 & Under Division came down to the final hole, with William Sheedy of Washington D.C., holding off Joe Parrini of York, Pa., by two strokes. Sheedy finished at 149 for the two-day event.

Thought trailing Cole Gibson of Chevy Chase, Md., at the start of the final round, both Sheedy and Parrini were on the game from the first hole. Sheedy started with three consecutive pars before a birdie on hole No. 13. He added another birdie on No. 16 and finished his first nine at 2-under-par 34. Parrini started with six pars and matched Sheedy's birdie on No. 16, as he fired a 1-under-par 35 through nine holes, leaving them tied after 27 holes.

Sheedy took the lead on hole No. 1 with a par, as Parrini made his first bogey of the day. That lead remained the same through the eighth hole as they carded identical scores, a bogey on No. 4 mixed in with six pars.

It looked like Parrini might even the score on hole No. 8, as he hit his tee shot inside 15 feet and Sheedy was left with 45 feet on his putt. Sheedy lagged his putt perfectly, leaving himself two feet for par, and made the putt. Parrini's birdie putt burned the right edge but did not fall.

With his one-stroke lead intact, Sheedy hit what was perhaps his best drive of the tournament on hole No. 9, striking the ball right down the middle on the par-5, with just outside 200 yards to the uphill green. Parrini's drive landed in the rough, leaving him without a chance to reach the green in two. Both players hit their approach shots to 60 yards, with Parrini needing some magic to potentially force a playoff. He hit his approach a little thick, coming up short of the green, while Sheedy's ball went 20 feet past the hole.

Parrini chipped the ball to 10 feet, but Sheedy's birdie putt came to within two feet, tapping in for par to seal his victory. Parrini could not make the putt, bogeying only his third hole of the day.

Sheedy finished the day at 1-under-par 70, the lowest round of the tournament of any player, winning him the Clazic Belts Low Final Round Award.

"Yesterday, on the ninth hole, I had about a 40 foot putt for par and I saved it," Sheedy noted as his most memorable shot of the tournament.

Parrini had been victorious in his last three IJGT Events, including a one-stroke victory over Sheedy at the Baltimore Junior three weeks prior. Kalavritinos rounded out the top three with scores of 79-77-156.
